Not only were The 5 Neat Guys a spoof of every clean-cut pre-rock vocal group out there (i.e. The Four Lads, The Hi-Lo's, The Four Aces, The Ames Brothers), but the material they recorded was right out of the playbook of Columbia Records under Mitch Miller in the 1950's. One prime example of what SCTV may have been spoofing with their "5 Neat Guys" bits was a minor record from late 1953 by the late Jimmy Boyd (of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" fame), called (get ready now): "I've Got Those 'Wake Up, Seven-Thirty - Wash Your Ears They're Dirty - Eat Your Eggs and Oatmeal - Rush to School' Blues." Which can be heard by clicking here. Not to mention when Ray Charles' seminal and highly influential R&B classic "I Got a Woman" from 1954 was covered a year later on Columbia by (of all people) Jo Stafford - as "I Got a Sweetie." (Yeah, we know - Huh!!?)
